Levels of care available at The Grove Estate
The Grove Estate offers two levels of care and five supporting programs. The levels of care are on-site medical detox and residential rehabilitation. The supporting programs are rehab for professionals, dual diagnosis treatment, family integration, exercise and nutrition, and aftercare planning.
Medical detox is the supervised withdrawal phase. Physicians prescribe medication and nursing staff monitor vital signs continuously until withdrawal resolves. The Grove Estate staffs detox at one team member for every four clients.
Residential rehab is 24-hour structured treatment at ASAM Level 3.5, with medical, nursing, and clinical services on site. Clients live at the estate for the full duration of the program, staffed at one team member for every twelve clients.
Rehab for professionals groups working professionals together so clients share comparable stressors, triggers, and return-to-work pressures.
Aftercare plans the transition out of residential treatment before discharge rather than after it.
The therapies delivered inside these programs are individual counseling, group counseling, drug and alcohol seminars, and holistic therapy.

The Grove Estate accepts commercial insurance on an out-of-network basis. Accepted plans include Blue Cross Blue Shield, Anthem, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, MultiPlan, PHP, USAMCO, and VA Optum. The Grove Estate does not accept Medicaid or Medicare.

He oversees psychiatric evaluations at admission and conducts clinical rounds weekly.
Ryan Cowles has worked in healthcare for 22 years, beginning as a certified nursing assistant. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Indiana University Kokomo in 2019 and served as a hospital house supervisor before joining The Grove Estate. Cowles directs the nursing team that monitors medical conditions across all 24 hours of the day, including during medical detox.
Lori Hawk directs quality, the function responsible for maintaining the standards required by Joint Commission accreditation and Indiana DMHA provider status.
The Grove Estate staffs medical detox at one team member for every four clients and residential treatment at one team member for every twelve. Detox carries the higher ratio because withdrawal requires continuous monitoring.

The working-professional specialization groups clients who face comparable circumstances: licensure exposure, employer disclosure, and return-to-work planning. Group composition is a clinical variable, and clients who share those pressures engage more directly in group counseling.

What does The Grove Estate facility include?
The Grove Estate occupies a 25-acre estate in Peru, Indiana centered on the 1889 Walnut Grove Mansion. The facility operates a residential capacity of 31 to 50 beds and includes on-site medical detox, private accommodations, fitness and wellness space, and private woodland used for recreational therapy.
The Walnut Grove Mansion was built in 1889 and is the primary treatment building on the estate. Detox is delivered on site, so clients do not transfer between facilities between withdrawal and residential treatment. Continuity of setting removes the most common point of drop-off in the first week.
The grounds support the exercise and nutrition program and the recreational therapy sessions delivered by the recreational therapist.

What is The Grove Estate’s approach to addiction treatment?
The Grove Estate uses a trauma-informed, non-coercive approach. Trauma-informed care treats unresolved trauma as a driver of substance use rather than a separate issue. Non-coercive means clients participate voluntarily and treatment plans are built with the client rather than imposed.
We built the program around a straightforward observation: adults who arrive at treatment having been pressured into it disengage, and adults who choose it stay. Every client at The Grove is here voluntarily, and the treatment plan is written with them rather than handed to them.
Our clinical team addresses trauma and substance use in the same treatment plan, because the two are rarely separable. That approach shapes group composition, session structure, and the pace we set for each client.
